Police
forces and astronomy websites have been inundated with sightings after a
suspected meteor shot across darkened British skies.
Reports
of a "bright light" and an "orange glow" were received by
police across Scotland and the north of England at around 9.40pm on Saturday.
The Met
Office tweeted: "Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we
believe it was a meteorite."
A
spokesman for Strathclyde Police said the force had been "inundated"
with calls about a bright object in the sky across the west of Scotland.
Minutes
later, Durham Police received calls from concerned members of public who had
seen a "bright light or a fire in the sky" and believed it may have
been an incident involving an aircraft.
The
American Meteor Society website was inundated with dozens of Britons logging
sightings.
Michelle
Thornton, from Birmingham, stated it was "the most amazing thing I have
seen in the night sky in ages - outstanding :)"
Meanwhile,
website user Brandi, from Stirling, at first thought it was a firework and
wondered if it was a missile after it "changed direction".
"We
wondered if it was a missile. The tail was longer than any astral body I have
ever seen and the colour between the head and tail was very distinct.
"The
head was bright - warm colours - and the tail was much longer. We thought it
was a firework because it stuttered out and seemed to fade, but we did not hear
the bang.
"It
then reappeared as it continued across the sky, seemingly changing directions
slightly - as if around a 15 degree corner.
"It
then also seemed to go lower down in the sky and then passed out of our vision
after another 10 seconds or so.
"It
still looked orangey-red in the distance as it left our vision, but we could
not see the tail from that angle."
The Royal
Observatory at Greenwich said it was probably part of a meteor shower that happens
at this time every year.
The
Kielder Observatory reported the sighting as a "huge fireball"
travelling from north to south over Northumberland at 9.41pm, and rated it at
magnitude -9.
A
brightness of magnitude -6 is required to be seen in daylight and according to
the International Meteor Organisation only one in 12,000 reaches magnitude -8.
The
observatory tweeted: "Of 30 years observing the sky #fireball best thing I
have ever seen period."
Around 9.45pm in Leeds 03/03/12. Standing in the garden I saw a huge
fireball travelling through the sky quite slow. Slow enough to stand and
figure out what it was. There was also what seemed to be small
fireballs breaking from the comet to the ground. Very scary!
Larger Object top left ,1 middle top decends, 2 smaller object come away from it , then larger top left releases a bigger object which goes right and downward ,this is seen clearly slowed to 50th of a second????
Taken on motion detector serveilance webcam luck tho as clouds moving triggered camera just right ONLY 3mega pixel so very grained
It then appears to disapear fast to the right , then the cloud clears and another bigger object comes into view ?? also vaguely one on the right side of shot

British government releases UFO documents; 6,000 pages of sightings
Thursday, February 18th 2010, 11:32 AM
The British government has received thousands of UFO reports over
the decades, and Thursday it released the largest amount of documents
ever concerning UFO sightings.
The documents, made available
online via PDF by the Ministry of Defence and The National Archives,
included 6,000 pages from 1994 to 2000
Location of Sighting: Hyde, Cheshire, Greater Manchester
Date of Sighting:
23/03/10
Time: 10:00
Witness Name: Ryan Newton
Witness Statement: i was on delivery (dominos pizza) and i was driving down
hyde road, from denton to hyde when i noticed 3 white lights in the sky.
i was driving so couldnt take a proper look at them so i pulled over to take
a safer look.
the 3 lights where white in colour and where constant, not flashing. the
craft was definitely triangular shaped as the shape of the craft was clearly
visible between each light.
There was 3 lights, one on the tip of each point of the triangle. you can
clearly see the dark shape and edges of the craft, it was triangular shaped and
black or dark in colour.
the craft looked as if it was either hovering in a fixed location, or
travelling very slowly before it travelled off into the distance at pace. it was
hard to tell where it was going, but headed in the direction of stockport,
woodley area.
it could of been a plane coming in to land and i viewed at a strange angle
but the craft was 100% definitely triangle shaped.
i did stand and watch the craft for about 40 seconds before it started to
move towards stockport.
the only way i can explain it, is a plane landing and being viewed at a
strange angle, but cannot explain why it was triangular and why it seemed to
be hovering, then noticeably moved off at pace.
Comment : If you can provide further information on this or other possible
UFO sightings in this area then please leave a comment or send details through
our submit sighting form.
Location of Sighting: HUNTINGDON, CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Date of Sighting:
22/03/10
Time: 9.00PM
Witness Name: SAMMY
Witness Statement: I SAW A REALLY BRIGHT STAR IN THE DISTANCE, I CALLED
MY HUSBAND TO COME AND LOOK, WE BOTH DECIDED IT MUST HAVE BEEN A PLANET AS WAS
TOO BIG TO BE A STAR BUT WAS A VERY BRIGHT ORANGE COLOUR. IT WAS STATIONARY FOR
A GOOD FEW MINUTES BUT AS WE WERE STARING AT IT IT STARTED TO MOVE VERY SLOWLY
UPWARDS, SO SLOWLY THAT IT TOOK ABOUT A MINUTE OR SO TO REALISE IT WAS ACTUALLY
MOVING, BUT THEN IT REALLY SPED UP AND CHANGED DIRECTION, IT WAS DEFINTIELY NOT
AN AEROPLANE, HELICOPTER OR CHINESE LANTERN

Britain on Thursday released 35 previously classified files documenting sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) by the military and members of the public dating back to the 1950s.Skip related content
The files contain around 8,500 pages which mainly cover the period from 1997 to 2005 and include photographs, drawings and descriptions of flying saucer sightings, as well as letters the Ministry of Defense (MoD) sent eyewitnesses in response to their accounts.
Policemen, a soldier, a Royal Air Force (RAF) officer and members of the public report sightings of objects including a "chewy mint shaped solid craft" and aerial objects resembling a "ring," a "jellyfish" and a "silver voile spin top."
In one account a man said he believed he had been "abducted" by aliens in October 1998 after seeing an unidentified craft hover over his London home and finding he had gained an hour of time in the process.
"It was a large cigar-shaped vehicle with big projectiles on each side like wings," he told the MoD.
"It seemed to have two very bright lights at the front and a white light flashing round and round underneath... As you can imagine, I felt quite shaken."
The MoD wrote to the man informing him that the object was probably an airship, adding that the time he had gained was probably the result of the clocks being put back one hour on the night of his close encounter.
Another file released by the National Archives reveals how the RAF was inundated with calls one morning in 1967 after residents of southern England awoke to find six small beeping UFOs lying in a perfect line from the Isle of Sheppey to the Bristol Channel.
A bomb disposal unit blew up one of the UFOs, another was airlifted to the southeastern village of Aldermaston and both the army and the MoD's intelligence unit were mobilised for what was considered a real "alien invasion."
It was later discovered that engineering students at Farnborough Technical College had constructed and positioned the UFOs in a bid to raise money for charity.
"It does raise some questions about what really would happen if at any time in the future there was some kind of instant -- would we be prepared?" said David Clarke, author of "The UFO Files" and consultant to the National Archives' UFO project.
One of the files documents the experiences of a retired RAF officer who said he saw a UFO while on holiday inSri Lankain April 2004 and sent the MoD supporting photographs.
"I noticed a partial aura in the sky, a minute or so later there was a clap of thunder, then a short while later a ring like a doughnut appeared," he told the MoD, adding that he thought it was an "air burst."
In its reply the MoD suggested he contact the Sri Lankan government.
Other highlights include a UFO policy file from 1997 which reveals how the Ministry of Defense handled UFO reports and a file detailing the only full debate about UFOs ever to be held in Britain's House of Lords -- in January 1979.
The MoD said it investigated every UFO sighting report it received to determine "whether there is any evidence that the United Kingdom's airspace might have been compromised by hostile or unauthorized air activity."
The files are available to download free of charge for one month at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ufos.
